Mr. Stevens:

As mentioned in the Western Horseman excerrpt, Randy Steffen's wife,
Dorothy and I were friends for many years.  In the 1960's, while researching books contracted for by
the government on the Cavalry, Western Saddles, etc., Randy came across  the original specs and
patterns for the old Pony Express saddles.  He had four commissioned; 1 went to the Museum of the Horse - Pataagonia, Az.;
l is in the Heritage Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma  City and I have the one that he kept for his collection.  Don't know what
happened to the fourth.

Until the time of his death in the 70's, this saddle was kept at the Steffen Ranch out of Stevenville, Texas.  After his death,
several years later Dorothy remarried Col. Richard Spencer and the relocated in Cisco, TX, where they lived until her death.
During our years of friendship,, I purchased some art-work done by Randy - bronze, painting; sketches, and articles that he
collected thru the years.  These include an l897 Singer castiron Sewing machine for leather and canvas;  old branding irons;
an old Cavalry Saddle; prints and numerous other items.

For complete on Randy - from his art work , awards and general history, if you search under  AskArt there is quite a lot of material thre.
Randy was a contributor to Western Horseman for many years as well as  designing their building in Colorado Springs.  He also
did the pictures on the Quarter Horse for the Quarter Horse Assn.  He was a multi-talented man with great artistic gifts.

If I find more info, I will  send it along.

Many thanks -   Shelley B.
